What you need to know

The following information IS important:

High-speed Internet access via Ethernet/Wireless

Currently, the cost of traffic from non-educational sites is $17 per gigabyte. Please make sure you only use RSISE's Internet connection for work-related activities. The following activities are prohibited:

- Downloading any format of music or video files
- Downloading illegal or cracked software of any kind
- Streaming music from online radio stations or other sources
- Using any form of peer-to-peer client such as eMule, BitTorrent, etc
- Online gaming of any kind
- Downloading or viewing adult material/pornography

The above list is just a selection of prohibited activities. For a full list, please see an IT Group member. If you are in any doubt as to whether a particular activity is prohibited or not, please speak to an IT Group member BEFORE undertaking the activity.

We understand that there will be circumstances where some of the above activies may be part of a research task. In these situations, you MUST seek out written permission from both your supervisor/Department Head and an IT Group member before continuing.

For people interested in downloading open source code and data, including entire Linux distributions, please speak to a member of the IT Group before you begin downloading, as in the majority of cases we either already have a copy or we can direct you to a site where the cost of the download is mitigated (such as on the AARNET network).

To check whether a site is free or not (in relation to data traffic) go to http://rsise.anu.edu.au/netcosts.php.

The IT Group constantly monitors data travelling across the network, and we reserve the right to retrieve the cost of excessive downloads directly from the user. Desktop computing

Where possible, RSISE will provide users with a suitable desktop computer for the duration of their stay. The provision of desktop computers is the responsibility of the Department Administrator.

Printing services

To assist in conserving our natural resources and minimising the costs associated, we ask that you only print when absolutely necessary. Please use duplexing (double-sided) and where possible recycle your paper once you have finished with it. We also ask that you only print colour where absolutely necessary. Try to use electronic storage rather than hardcopy storage where possible.

Server filespace

RSISE provides all permanent staff and students with 14GB of filespace for research/work purposes. This is, in most cases, adequate storage for users. However, if you believe you need more space, please contact an IT Group member to discuss the options available. In many cases, we can modify the local hard disk partitions so you can store non-critical data locally. Please ensure you only store work-related data in your home directory.

Network services

We will always endevour to have all network services up and running at all times. However, when it becomes necessary to suspend services for upgrading or maintenance, we will advise you via email as early as possible. We will also endevour to perform such tasks outside normal business hours to minmise the impact to users.

Backup/Restore services

The RSISE backup system performs an incremental backup every night, and a full backup each week (over the weekend). We cannot guarantee the integrity of any particular backup, however we do regularly check that backups are being performed correctly. Please see a member of the IT Group if you wish to restore data.

Support for RSISE-related services

IT support is available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside these times the IT Group will assist where possible. For those users with personal laptops, or self-managed machines, the IT Group can only provide limited support where time permits.
